The Land & Wave Outdoor Instructor Training course is unique and wonderful, it’s at the heart of our company, it shapes what we do and how we do it.

Immersing brilliant people in the great outdoors is an incredible way to spend a Winter.

We’ve worked very hard to make our course fantastic; we’ve learnt that inspiring, professional, engaging and generally wonderful coaches, instructors and assessors are essential.

We know that to build skills and confidence our trainee Outdoor Instructors need to be taught by knowledgeable, passionate people –

Paul Taylor – Activities Manager 

Climbs like a spider. Has spent more time on the Jurassic Coast than the dinosaurs. He makes sure that Outdoor Instructor Training is as good as it can be.

Matt Roberts – Lead Instructor  

Man of the mountains, boundless enthusiasm, years of wisdom, occasionally has incredible hair, great at stories.

Mark Garland – Coasteering and Climbing Specialist

A man that teaches with empathy and insight. Works with Land & Wave to make our climbing and coasteering as good as it can be.

Specialities: Coasteering, Climbing, Mountains 

Sophie Tanner – The Management 

Loves the ocean and jumping in the sea, the wise old sage of Land & Wave with decades of experience working with groups. 

Specialities: First Aid, Coasteering, Headbands 

Mel Wycherly – Lead Instructor  

A man that loves a boat and a paddle, only really comfortable in a canoe or a kayak, tons of experience.

Specialities:  Kayaking, Canoeing, SUP

Owen Senior – Jack of all Trades

Wrote the book on bushcraft, incredible ginger beard, impervious to waves and cold (is quite fat)

Specialities:  Bushcraft, Coasteering, Canoeing 

Sam Locke – Lead Instructor, Teacher

Will teach anything to anyone if she has 10 minutes to plan and a sharpie in her pocket.

Can run a marathon fuelled solely on melon and carrot sticks. 

Specialities: Teaching, the Ocean

Jason Roberts – Lead Instructor

Jason is an excellent human being, if you want an adventure organised (really well) – he’s your man

Specialities: Coasteering, Navigation, Bushcraft 

Alex Mortimer – Lead Instructor

Cool, calm, collected. NOT as sad as his face makes him look. Always has perfect ha

Specialities: Kayaking, SUP, Rivers

Lyndsay Mcphee

Queen of the Canoe. Paddle Sport Jedi. At home on the water. Usually holding a paddle.

Specialities: Kayaking, Canoe, SUP

David Mutton – The Management 

Paddle Boarding guru, master of risk assessment, Northern. Land & Wave’s longest serving member of staff.

Specialities: Paddle Boarding, Teaching, Stubble

Phil Harris – Lead Instructor

Just bloody loves being outside. At home in the woods. Kind, tempered. Likes a stomp up a hill.

Specialities: Coasteering, Navigation, Bushcraft

Darren Joy – Coaching Specialist  

A full time BCU Level 5 Coach with a loads of river experience under his boat, a Canoe England national trainer for safety and rescue and leadership awards. 

Specialities: Kayaking, Coaching, Development
